Jose Cifuentes volleyed home a goal with 15 minutes to play to lift Los Angeles FC to a 2-2 draw with the visiting Vancouver Whitecaps on Saturday evening in a Western Conference match.
Vancouver (3-7-5, 14 points) jumped to the lead in the 25th minute as Deiber Caicedo got behind LAFC goalkeeper Tomas Romero, picked up a loose ball after a bad clearing attempt from LAFC defender Moon-Hwan Kim and sent home a right-footed shot from very close range to the bottom right corner of the net.
The Whitecaps added their second goal in the 38th minute when Cristian Dajome leaped to head home a crossing pass from Cristian Gutierrez following a set piece situation. Dajome's header found the top-left corner of the net and never gave Romero a chance to make a save.
LAFC showed some life and cut their deficit in half on Carlos Vela's goal in the 40th minute. Vela was just onside for a picture-perfect pass from Eduard Atuesta, with his shot beating Vancouver keeper Thomas Hasel to the bottom left corner. The goal was awarded following a VAR review to assure Vela was onside.
Los Angeles (6-5-4, 22 points) then produced the equalizer in the 75th minute as Cifuentes perfectly picked out of the air a crossing pass from Diego Palacios, using the outside of his right foot to beat Hasel to the bottom left corner.
Caicedo looked to have given the Whitecaps the lead in the 84th minute but his goal was waived off for offside.
LAFC earned a point from a losing position for the first time this season. They are unbeaten in three home matches all time against the Whitecaps.
The Whitecaps have picked up five points in their past three games (a win and two draws). Vancouver is winless in 13 straight away matches (four draws, nine losses).
