Investment of $10,000 to help organize the Federation of Northern Ontario Municipalities 2022 Conference

April 26, 2022 - North Bay, ON - Federal Economic Development Agency for Northern Ontario - FedNor

Strong communities are one of the key pillars of thriving local economies, which is why it's important to work closely with our many partners at the local level to help them attract investment, diversify the regional economy and create jobs. Through its regional development agencies, such as FedNor in Northern Ontario, the Government of Canada is investing to help communities recover from the impact of COVID-19.

Today, the Honourable Patty Hajdu, Minister of Indigenous Services and Minister responsible for FedNor, announced that the Federation of Northern Ontario Municipalities (FONOM) will receive $10,000, through FedNor,  to organize and host a Northeastern Ontario Municipal Conference from May 9-11, 2022 in North Bay.

Municipalities in Northeastern Ontario are facing a number of challenges post COVID-19, including a lack of skilled workers, insufficient broadband coverage, youth outmigration, an aging population and a declining tax base. This conference will help municipalities to gather and share best practices in their recovery efforts and for economic development. The Northern Ontario Development Program funding is being used to offset conference costs associated with promotion, delegate kits, printing, translation and signage.

Northern Ontario has been hard hit by COVID-19 and today's announcement is further proof of the Government of Canada's commitment to support innovative entrepreneurs, businesses and start-ups so they can overcome the impacts of COVID-19, ramp up quickly and fully participate in our economic recovery.
